This is the most common question we get from first-time smart home buyers. Both work, but they solve different problems — and mixing them up is one of the top reasons people end up frustrated with their setup.
Smart Bulbs are plug-and-play. Screw one in, add it to your app, and you're done. They're great for lamps, accent lighting, or any fixture where you want color or tunable white. The catch: if someone flips the physical switch off, the bulb loses power and goes offline. Your automations stop working until someone turns the switch back on. It's a solvable problem, but it trips people up.
Smart Switches replace the wall switch and control whatever bulbs are in the fixture — including regular dumb bulbs. The switch always has power, so automations and remote control work reliably. Downside: installation requires turning off the breaker, and some older homes lack a neutral wire, which limits your options.
Our recommendation: Use smart switches wherever you have overhead lighting controlled by a wall switch. Use smart bulbs for floor lamps, table lamps, or accent lights where the switch stays on. That combination gives you the best of both worlds without the reliability headaches.

Most smart home devices run on the 2.4 GHz WiFi band. Older routers, especially those provided by ISPs, handle 2.4 GHz poorly — they're congested, have weak coverage, and drop devices under load. Add a dozen smart devices to that mix and reliability falls apart fast.
